STUDENT ACTIVITIES

BLACK HISTORY MONTH –  Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by African Americans Ryan Coogler, a film director and screenwriter who co-wrote the screenplay with film director Joe Robert Cole. Black Panther continues to dominate the box office. The superhero movie made $108 million during its second week at the US and Canadian box office, with a further $83.8 million coming from international markets this weekend. So far, the movie has made $704 million in total globally ($400 million domestically and $304 million internationally) since its release earlier this month.  Black Panther becomes just the 4th movie in history to make more than $100 million in its second weekend, the others being Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($149.2 million), Jurassic World ($106.6 million), and The Avengers ($103 million).  Movies typically see a massive drop-off in box office results from the first week to the second, but Black Panther’s US haul only dropped 47 percent from the $218 million it made during its opening weekend. That figure represented a record for a February release.

CONGRATULATIONS WRESTLING – THREE BROPHY WRESTLERS NAMED TO FIRST-TEAM ALL PREMIER LEAGUE WRESTLING TEAM:  JACOBS, de la ROCHA, AND BROUCEK HIGHLIGHT HONOREES!  Senior Luke Jacobs, state runner-up at 160-pounds, highlights a trio of Brophy student-athletes who were named first-team All-Premier League last night in Chandler. Jacobs caps off a memorable season by earning first-team honors at 160-pounds. Gabe de la Rocha, a senior captain who placed third in the state tournament, was a unanimous winner at 182-pounds, and junior Will Broucek got the nod at 195-pounds for winning the sectional meet (and by defeating the state runner-up) this past February. “I am happy for Luke, Gabe, and Will. Luke and Gabe worked extremely hard this past off-season and I am happy that they are gaining post-season notoriety. Will Broucek is unique. He is a first-year wrestler who won the sectional meet and defeated the state runner-up. Will has already been in the room looking ahead to a 2019 state title,” said Brophy Head Coach Wayne Catan.  Earning Honorable Mention were sophomore Ben Goettl (120-pounds), Thomas Derr (220-lbs), and senior Dominic Dallago at heavyweight.  (Dallago made history this past January when he became the first-ever Brophy wrestler to win the Flowing Wells Invitational.) All three wresters were state qualifiers. Goettl and Derr, along with Broucek, comprise the nucleus of the 2018-1019 Brophy Wrestling Team.  The Premier League is comprised of several valley schools including Basha High School, Chandler High School, Hamilton High School, and Perry High School.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

BLACK HISTORY MONTHAnna Pauline “Pauli” Murray was an American civil rights activist, women’s rights activist, lawyer, Episcopal priest, and author. Drawn to the ministry, in 1977 Murray became the first black woman to be ordained as an Episcopal priest and she was among the first group of women to become priests in that church.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Murray was raised mostly by her maternal grandparents in Durham, North Carolina. At the age of 16, she moved to New York City to attend Hunter College, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1933. In 1940, Murray sat in the whites-only section of a Virginia bus with a friend, and they were arrested for violating state segregation laws. This incident, and her subsequent involvement with the socialist Workers’ Defense League, led her to pursue her career goal of working as a civil rights lawyer. She enrolled in the law school at Howard University, where she also became aware of sexism. She called it “Jane Crow”, alluding to the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States.

On this Day February 23, 1979  United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General Frank Emmanuel Petersen Jr. was promoted to brigadier general, becoming the first African-American general in the Marine Corps.  In May 1983, he advanced to the rank of major general and on 12 June 1986, he was promoted to lieutenant general.  Petersen retired from the Marine Corps in 1988 after 38 years of service. “At the time of his retirement he was by date of aviator designation the senior ranking aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps and the United States Navy with respective titles of ‘Silver Hawk’ and ‘Gray Eagle’. His date of designation as an aviator also precedes all other aviators in the U.S. Air Force and Army.”  In 2010, President Obama appointed Petersen to the Board of Visitors to the United States Naval Academy.

CONGRATULATIONS VARSITY BASEBALL in the Adam Donnenfield Tournament.  They win;  9-2 vs a sound Kofa team on yesterday.  Solid outing by Nick Tiedeman on the mound.  Lucas Grennan lead the offensive charge for the Broncos.

STRAWS – Did you know that an American citizen will use 38,000 straws in their lifetime. Or, that most straws end up in landfills or in the ocean? If you want to help the environment, please come to the screening of the short film STRAWS on Wednesday, February 28th, HGH, 6:00 pm.  Hosted by Loyola Academy robotics!

Black by Popular Demand: New Black Leadership for a New Black Era – You may have heard or seen some information circulating about an event we are hosting next Tuesday, February 27th, HGH.  This event is called “Black by Popular Demand: New Black Leadership for a New Black Era.”   This event, in collaboration with Diamond Strategies, brings together several Black leaders of the Valley representing the fields of philanthropy, politics, medicine, STEM, education, community organizing, and entrepreneurship to discuss Black leadership and community stewardship today.  The event is open to the public and free.  All students, faculty, and families are invited. XCP/BCP SPRING MUSICAL Into The Woods, Thursday-Saturday, March 1-3, 7:00 p.m. nightly, including a Matinee, 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.  This musical brings several fairy tales into one tale, complete with heroes and heroines, evil characters, and a very interesting ending! We all wish we could live happily ever after, but life is rarely black and white. The characters travel an amazing journey filled with obstacles, but they learn to depend on each other in order to overcome adversity. We find the characters are unique individuals who wish for goodness in the future and learn “to mind the wolf, to heed the witch, to honor the giant, to find, to think, to teach, to join, to go to the festival, into the woods, then out of the woods – and happily ever after!”

$10.00, general seating; XCP Virginia G. Piper Performing Arts Center, Box Office: Purchase Tickets Online HERE or call (602) 240-3161 for ticket information.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.  King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference(SCLC) in 1957, serving as its first president. With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia, and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham, Alabama. He also helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.  On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.[1] In 1965, he helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, and the following year he and the SCLC took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In the final years of his life, he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty and the Vietnam War, alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled Beyond Vietnam.
