In collaboration: Brophy College Preparatory, ASU Herberger School of Music & Arizona Music Enrichment Foundation proudly announce Jim Walker in Concert at The Nash with The Mike Kocour Trio and Select Students from the Brophy Jazz Band Friday, March 22, 2019, 7:30 p.m.  Tickets available through THE NASH website. Professor of Flute at USC & Colburn School of Music, Mr. Walker’s resume includes former principal flutist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, first-call studio flutist, and fifty-plus years in education.  Mr. Kocour has performed with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Benny Golson, and the Chicago Symphony. He is Professor of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University. All proceeds will be donated to Project Sleep, a National organization that promotes advocacy, education, and research towards helping people with sleep disorders like Narcolepsy.

The F.A.M.E. Club (finance, accounting, money management, and entrepreneurship) Speaker – Tuesday, March 26 @ lunch, Mr. Brent Downs, the executive director of St. Joseph’s the Worker will be speaking in room E201 about his experience in helping rehabilitate homeless and incarcerated men and transitioning them into meaning jobs. If you are interested in faith, Justice, and non-profit work, you should really consider attending this meeting.

3RD ANNUAL CULTURE WEEKWeek of March 25th-29th! Each day of the week there will be an activity in the Great Hall @ lunch that examines different aspects of culture. Join us for one or all of the activities to celebrate, explore, and deepen our cultural identities.  Also, Brophy will host its 1ST EVER, Cultural Celebration Night to cap off Culture Week, Friday, March 29th, 6-9 pm with performances, food, games, and so much more! Attention all Xavier and Brophy students involved in any of the plays at Xavier, Brophy, or both, either on or backstage, and all Drama Club members:  Inductions into the honor society of the International Thespian Society are coming up, as well as awards for Drama Club, points earned awards, and graduating Seniors Thespian awards.  You will want to check your eligibility and points within the next two weeks.  Please speak to any Drama Club officer or come see Ms. Robillard in the Drama Room on the Xavier campus.  Being a Thespian means something not only to you but also to the colleges and universities you are intending to attend.  All updates are due by Friday, March 29 to ensure you are awarded the honors you deserve.

Valley Leadership Program

Valley Leadership has opened registration for its Valley Leadership Youth 2019 program.  The program is for high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in expanding their leadership skills, learning more about philanthropy and making a difference in the community.

The program costs $150; scholarships are available. Program dates: Saturday, April 6 and April 27, 9 a.m.-noon; and Tuesday, May 7, 5-7 p.m. The program meets at CoHoots Midtown Classroom, 221 E. Indianola Ave., Phoenix 85012.      Register here >

The 2019 Brophy Blood Drive will be held on Tuesday, March 26th in the Robson Gym lobby! CAREER EXPLORATION NIGHT – On behalf of the Brophy Dad’s Club, Mothers Guild, and Brophy Counseling Department we would like to invite all students to join us for Brophy’s first Career Exploration Night. Freshman Families, Sign Up to Attend Community of Concern – In spring 2019, Brophy will continue its partnership with the Community of Concern, a nationally-recognized program for the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use by youths. Both opioid abuse and e-cigarette use will be addressed, as well. This mandatory event for all freshman students, with each student accompanied by one parent, is on the Brophy Activities Calendar for March 26, 27 and 28 from 6-8 p.m. in Harper Great Hall. Every freshman, accompanied by one parent, must attend one of these evening sessions to learn about Brophy’s Community of Concern. Sign up here.

Freshman Families, Sign Up to Attend Community of Concern – In spring 2019, Brophy will continue its partnership with the Community of Concern, a nationally-recognized program for the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use by youths. Both opioid abuse and e-cigarette use will be addressed, as well. This mandatory event for all freshman students, with each student accompanied by one parent, is on the Brophy Activities Calendar for March 26, 27 and 28 from 6-8 p.m. in Harper Great Hall. Every freshman, accompanied by one parent, must attend one of these evening sessions to learn about Brophy’s Community of Concern. Sign up here.

BLAM. Congratulations to the winners of BLAM’s Summit contests. For the art contest, which asked artists to create a piece of art that represents health and the human body or mind,🥉3rd place was awarded to “In Perfect Isolation Here Behind My Wall” by Hayden Wolf ’19. 🥈2nd place to “Yin Yang” by Dean Kobs ’20, and 🥇1st place to “Juice in July” by John O’Connor ’19. For the writing contest, which asked writers to step into the shoes of someone with a health challenge and write a first-person narrative,🥉3rd place was awarded to “But Instead I Just Survive” by Jackson Vickers ’19. 🥈2nd place to “The Classroom” by Davis Houck ’21, and 🥇1st place to “Only the Beginning” by Sammy Cibulka ’19. The Academic Resource Center (ARC) will be closed this week from Tuesday afternoon through Friday. The ARC will resume regular hours next week. Please plan accordingly with your teachers to make-up exams.

HONOR CHORALE – Final opportunity to audition for Honor Chorale 2019-20, Wednesday at break and lunch.  The signup sheet is located outside the choir classroom, E121.  This will be your last chance.

*’SNEAK PEEK’ CONCERT, Tuesday, March 19th, 7 p.m., Brophy Chapel.  The Orchestra will open the evening with traditional string orchestra repertoire. Works will include string transcriptions of works by Gustav Holst and Bela Bartok.  Also included will be more contemporary compositions appropriate for high school level orchestras.

Following the orchestra’s performance, the concert will transition into more of the ‘Sneak Peek’ nature of the evening.  Our audience will get a glimpse of some of the choral curriculum that occurs in the classroom; vocal techniques and warm-up exercises, the development and use of ‘solfege’ as a sight-reading tool, and more. The other glimpse will be a taste of what is to come at our May 2 & 3 concerts.  The May concerts will be ALL POPS, certainly a first for me.  You will hear more about this at the concert next Tuesday evening.

In collaboration: Brophy College Preparatory, ASU Herberger School of Music & Arizona Music Enrichment Foundation proudly announce Jim Walker in Concert at The Nash with The Mike Kocour Trio and Select Students from the Brophy Jazz Band Friday, March 22, 2019, 7:30 p.m.  Tickets available through THE NASH website. Professor of Flute at USC & Colburn School of Music, Mr. Walker’s resume includes former principal flutist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, first-call studio flutist, and fifty-plus years in education.  Mr. Kocour has performed with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Benny Golson, and the Chicago Symphony. He is Professor of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University. All proceeds will be donated to Project Sleep, a National organization that promotes advocacy, education, and research towards helping people with sleep disorders like Narcolepsy.

3RD ANNUAL CULTURE WEEKWeek of March 25th-29th! Each day of the week there will be an activity in the Great Hall @ lunch that examines different aspects of culture. Join us for one or all of the activities to celebrate, explore, and deepen our cultural identities.  Also, Brophy will host its 1ST EVER, Cultural Celebration Night to cap off Culture Week, Friday, March 29th, 6-9 pm with performances, food, games, and so much more! Attention all Xavier and Brophy students involved in any of the plays at Xavier, Brophy, or both, either on or backstage, and all Drama Club members:  Inductions into the honor society of the International Thespian Society are coming up, as well as awards for Drama Club, points earned awards, and graduating Seniors Thespian awards.  You will want to check your eligibility and points within the next two weeks.  Please speak to any Drama Club officer or come see Ms. Robillard in the Drama Room on the Xavier campus.  Being a Thespian means something not only to you but also to the colleges and universities you are intending to attend.  All updates are due by Friday, March 29 to ensure you are awarded the honors you deserve.

Valley Leadership Program

Valley Leadership has opened registration for its Valley Leadership Youth 2019 program.  The program is for high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in expanding their leadership skills, learning more about philanthropy and making a difference in the community.

The program costs $150; scholarships are available. Program dates Saturday, April 6 and April 27, 9 a.m.-noon; and Tuesday, May 7, 5-7 p.m. The program meets at CoHoots Midtown Classroom, 221 E. Indianola Ave., Phoenix 85012.      Register here >

CONGRATULATIONS BROPHY TRACK AND FIELD who finished 3rd place in the team scoring among 35 schools at the Rattler Invitational on Saturday.  Brophy guys scored in 13 of the 18 events to earn the 74 team points.

The Jewish Student Union and the OFJ will be hosting a special interfaith conversation on Monday, March 18th at lunch in B103. Special guest presenters, Rabbi Koppell from Temple Chai and Ms. Azra Hussain from the Islamic Speakers Bureau will talk about the similarities between Judaism and Islam. Everyone is invited.

Works will include string transcriptions of works by Gustav Holst and Bela Bartok.  Also included will be more contemporary compositions appropriate for high school level orchestras.

Following the orchestra’s performance, the concert will transition into more of the ‘Sneak Peek’ nature of the evening.  Our audience will get a glimpse of some of the choral curriculum that occurs in the classroom; vocal techniques and warm-up exercises, the development and use of ‘solfege’ as a sight-reading tool, and more. The other glimpse will be a taste of what is to come at our May 2 & 3 concerts.  The May concerts will be ALL POPS, certainly a first for me.  You will hear more about this at the concert next Tuesday evening.

 

In collaboration: Brophy College Preparatory, ASU Herberger School of Music & Arizona Music Enrichment Foundation proudly announce Jim Walker in Concert at The Nash with The Mike Kocour Trio and Select Students from the Brophy Jazz Band Friday, March 22, 2019 7:30 p.m.  Tickets available through THE NASH website. Professor of Flute at USC & Colburn School of Music, Mr. Walker’s resume includes former principal flutist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, first-call studio flutist, and fifty-plus years in education.  Mr. Kocour has performed with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Benny Golson, and the Chicago Symphony. He is Professor of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University. All proceeds will be donated to Project Sleep, a National organization that promotes advocacy, education, and research towards helping people with sleep disorders like Narcolepsy.

3RD ANNUAL CULTURE WEEK – Week of March 25th-29th! Each day of the week there will be an activity in the Great Hall @ lunch that examines different aspects of culture. Join us for one or all of the activities to celebrate, explore, and deepen our cultural identities.  Also, Brophy will host its 1ST EVER, Cultural Celebration Night to cap off Culture Week, Friday, March 29th, 6-9 pm with performances, food, games, and so much more! Valley Leadership Program

Valley Leadership has opened registration for its Valley Leadership Youth 2019 program.  The program is for high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in expanding their leadership skills, learning more about philanthropy and making a difference in the community.

 Freshman Families, Sign Up to Attend Community of Concern – In spring 2019, Brophy will continue its partnership with the Community of Concern, a nationally-recognized program for the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use by youths. Both opioid abuse and e-cigarette use will be addressed, as well. This mandatory event for all freshman students, with each student accompanied by one parent, is on the Brophy Activities Calendar for March 26, 27 and 28 from 6-8 p.m. in Harper Great Hall. WILD, WILD WEST : Brophy’s first ever country dance – TONIGHT, 7-9 p.m. and we have a ton of fun planned for you. We will have a mechanical bull on campus! Because of the fun involved, we will need to you digitally submit a waiver through the attached form in order to ride the bull. You won’t be able to participate unless you have completed the waiver and submitted it before the end of the school day on Friday.  If you are a Luddite living in analog feel free to print, sign, and turn the waiver into Ms. Dennard You can submit the form here and the waiver is attached below! Tickets are only $10 on sale through Ms. Dennard, the Varsity Shop or your favorite student council member. Tickets are limited, so get them while you can.  Please make every effort to have a ride arranged by 9:15 p.m.  Dress code guidelines:  Bring your best country attire: flannels, non-ripped blue jeans, bandanas, and cowboy boots are all welcome. Aside from that, regular t-shirts, shorts, and close-toed shoes are all acceptable.  We ask that you refrain from wearing clothing with holes, tears, inappropriate logos/designs/patterns, or vulgar references. If you have to ask, just don’t wear it. 

POETRY OUT LOUD. Junior Daniel Noon ’20 will compete in the Arizona State Finals at the Burton Barr Public Library this Saturday, March 16, 2-4pm. Daniel represented Brophy at the Poetry Out Loud central region competition at ASU West last month and earned 1st Place in total points. Daniel will compete this weekend to become Brophy’s first ever State Champion. Please join us at Burton Barr Public Library, 2-4pm to cheer Daniel on. 

The Jewish Student Union and the OFJ will be hosting a special interfaith conversation on Monday, March 18th at lunch in B103. Special guest presenters, Rabbi Koppell from Temple Chai and Ms. Azra Hussain from the Islamic Speakers Bureau will talk about the similarities between Judaism and Islam. Everyone is invited.

Lasana Omar Hotep has served as the program coordinator for Arizona State University’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD) and as Director of Multicultural Affairs at Estrella Mountain Community College (Avondale, AZ).  Most recently, he has served as the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Equity and Student Success for the Peralta Community College District (Oakland, CA). He currently serves as the Dean of Student Equity and Support Programs and Founding Executive Director of the Equity Institute at Skyline College in San Bruno, California.

Freshman Families, Sign Up to Attend Community of Concern – In spring 2019, Brophy will continue its partnership with the Community of Concern, a nationally-recognized program for the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use by youths. Both opioid abuse and e-cigarette use will be addressed, as well. This mandatory event for all freshman students, with each student accompanied by one parent, is on the Brophy Activities Calendar for March 26, 27 and 28 from 6-8 p.m. in Harper Great Hall. CONGRATULATIONS BROPHY’S VARSITY AND JV TENNIS TEAMS on a successful match yesterday with their victory over Sunnyslope High School. Varsity won 9-0 and JV won 8-1; a huge win for the Broncos. Tonight, the Broncos will be playing Horizon. Wish them good luck!

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) will be closed next Tuesday afternoon through Friday. Please plan accordingly with your teachers to make-up exams.

Dream On Campaign Update – TODAY – LUNCH – SAC Join the Advocacy Club at lunch TODAY in the SAC at lunch for a brief presentation about the Dream On Campaign and its work to increase access to in-state higher education for all high school students! WILD, WILD WEST : Brophy’s first ever country dance – Brophy’s first ever country dance, Wild Wild West, is this Friday, 7-9 p.m. and we have a ton of fun planned for you. We will have a mechanical bull on campus! Because of the fun involved, we will need to you digitally submit a waiver through the attached form in order to ride the bull. You won’t be able to participate unless you have completed the waiver and submitted it before the end of the school day on Friday.  If you are a Luddite living in analog feel free to print, sign, and turn the waiver into Ms. Dennard You can submit the form here and the waiver is attached below! Tickets are only $10 on sale through Ms. Dennard, the Varsity Shop or your favorite student council member. Tickets are limited, so get them while you can.  Please make every effort to have a ride arranged by 9:15 p.m.  Dress code guidelines:  Bring your best country attire: flannels, non-ripped blue jeans, bandanas, and cowboy boots are all welcome. Aside from that, regular t-shirts, shorts, and close-toed shoes are all acceptable.  We ask that you refrain from wearing clothing with holes, tears, inappropriate logos/designs/patterns, or vulgar references. If you have to ask, just don’t wear it. 

POETRY OUT LOUD. Junior Daniel Noon ’20 will compete in the Arizona State Finals at the Burton Barr Public Library this Saturday, March 16, 2-4pm. Daniel represented Brophy at the Poetry Out Loud central region competition at ASU West last month and earned 1st Place in total points. Daniel will compete this weekend to become Brophy’s first ever State Champion. Please join us at Burton Barr Public Library, 2-4pm to cheer Daniel on. 

The Jewish Student Union and the OFJ will be hosting a special interfaith conversation on Monday, March 18th at lunch in B103. Special guest presenters, Rabbi Koppell from Temple Chai and Ms. Azra Hussain from the Islamic Speakers Bureau will talk about the similarities between Judaism and Islam. Everyone is invited.

‘SNEAK PEEK’ CONCERT, Tuesday, March 19th, 7 p.m., Brophy Chapel.  The Orchestra will open the evening with traditional string orchestra repertoire. Works will include string transcriptions of works by Gustav Holst and Bela Bartok.  Also included will be more contemporary compositions appropriate for high school level orchestras.  

Following the orchestra’s performance, the concert will transition into more of the ‘Sneak Peek’ nature of the evening.  Our audience will get a glimpse of some of the choral curriculum that occurs in the classroom; vocal techniques and warm up exercises, the development and use of ‘solfege’ as a sight reading tool, and more. The other glimpse will be a taste of what is to come at our May 2 & 3 concerts.  The May concerts will be ALL POPS, certainly a first for me.  You will hear more about this at the concert next Tuesday evening.

Valley Leadership Program

Valley Leadership has opened registration for its Valley Leadership Youth 2019 program.  The program is for high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in expanding their leadership skills, learning more about philanthropy and making a difference in the community.

The program costs $150; scholarships are available. Program dates: Saturday, April 6 and April 27, 9 a.m.-noon; and Tuesday, May 7, 5-7 p.m. The program meets at CoHoots Midtown Classroom, 221 E. Indianola Ave., Phoenix 85012.      Register here >

Lasana Omar Hotep has served as the program coordinator for Arizona State University’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD) and as Director of Multicultural Affairs at Estrella Mountain Community College (Avondale, AZ).  Most recently, he has served as the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Equity and Student Success for the Peralta Community College District (Oakland, CA). He currently serves as the Dean of Student Equity and Support Programs and Founding Executive Director of the Equity Institute at Skyline College in San Bruno, California.

POETRY OUT LOUD. Junior Daniel Noon ’20 will compete in the Arizona State Finals at the Burton Barr Public Library this Saturday, March 16, 2-4pm. Daniel represented Brophy at the Poetry Out Loud central region competition at ASU West last month and earned 1st Place in total points. Daniel will compete this weekend to become Brophy’s first ever State Champion. Please join us at Burton Barr Public Library, 2-4pm to cheer Daniel on. 

The Jewish Student Union and the OFJ will be hosting a special interfaith conversation on Monday, March 18th at lunch in B103. Special guest presenters, Rabbi Koppell from Temple Chai and Ms. Azra Hussain from the Islamic Speakers Bureau will talk about the similarities between Judaism and Islam. Everyone is invited.

Valley Leadership Program

Valley Leadership has opened registration for its Valley Leadership Youth 2019 program.  The program is for high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in expanding their leadership skills, learning more about philanthropy and making a difference in the community.

The program costs $150; scholarships are available. Program dates: Saturday, April 6 and April 27, 9 a.m.-noon; and Tuesday, May 7, 5-7 p.m. The program meets at CoHoots Midtown Classroom, 221 E. Indianola Ave., Phoenix 85012.      Register here >

PRESENTATION/WORKSHOP THIS FRIDAY – On behalf of the Brophy Black Student Union, (BSU), I invite you to attend the forthcoming presentation/workshop, “Young+Black+Male: Beyond Jordan’s, Play stations, and Trap Music,” facilitated by nationally known educator, speaker, entrepreneur, and consultant, Lasana O. Hotep.  This Friday, March 15th, 1:30pm to 3:30pm in the SAC

Lasana Omar Hotep has served as the program coordinator for Arizona State University’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD) and as Director of Multicultural Affairs at Estrella Mountain Community College (Avondale, AZ).  Most recently, he has served as the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Equity and Student Success for the Peralta Community College District (Oakland, CA). He currently serves as the Dean of Student Equity and Support Programs and Founding Executive Director of the Equity Institute at Skyline College in San Bruno, California.

Lasana Leads Hotep Consultants, an institutional equity, cultural fluency and student success firm. He also serves as the co-founder and Chief Visionary Officer for Ogun Media, Incorporated / MyClickUrban.com.  His publications include chapters in African-American Men in College, Be A Father to Your Child: Real Talk from Black Men of the Hip Hop Generation, and The Black Male Handbook: A Blueprint for Life.  He is the co-author of the forthcoming Minding the Obligation Gap: Theory and Practice in Achieving Educational Equity Campus Wide (2019).   We hope that you will attend what will no doubt be a transformational experience!

Freshman Families, Sign Up to Attend Community of Concern – In spring 2019, Brophy will continue its partnership with the Community of Concern, a nationally-recognized program for the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use by youths. Both opioid abuse and e-cigarette use will be addressed, as well. This mandatory event for all freshman students, with each student accompanied by one parent, is on the Brophy Activities Calendar for March 26, 27 and 28 from 6-8 p.m. in Harper Great Hall. SUMMIT ON HUMAN DIGNITY – The Search for Health: Dignifying the Mind, Body, and Spirit

The last Summit excursion is a hike! Piestewa Peak!  The Hike for the Summit will begin at the Hopi Parking area in the Piestewa Peak Park. Construction has left some areas closed to parking.  The hike will begin at 2:30-ish from the Hopi parking area. So, grab lunch/change/whatever after school and head over. Freshman Families, Sign Up to Attend Community of Concern – In spring 2019, Brophy will continue its partnership with the Community of Concern, a nationally-recognized program for the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco use by youths. Both opioid abuse and e-cigarette use will be addressed, as well. This mandatory event for all freshman students, with each student accompanied by one parent, is on the Brophy Activities Calendar for March 26, 27 and 28 from 6-8 p.m. in Harper Great Hall. Every freshman, accompanied by one parent, must attend one of these eveningsessions to learn about Brophy’s Community of Concern. Sign up here.

WILD, WILD WEST: Brophy’s first ever country dance – Brophy’s first ever country dance, Wild Wild West, is this Friday, 7-9 p.m. and we have a ton of fun planned for you. Here’s everything you’ll need to know:  Tickets are only $10, and will be on sale as of break today through Ms. Dennard, the Varsity Shop or your favorite student council member. Tickets are limited, so get them while you can.  Please make every effort to have a ride arranged by 9:15 p.m.  Dress code guidelines:  Bring your best country attire: flannels, non-ripped blue jeans, bandanas, and cowboy boots are all welcome. Aside from that, regular t-shirts, shorts, and close-toed shoes are all acceptable.

We ask that you refrain from wearing clothing with holes, tears, inappropriate logos/designs/patterns, or vulgar references. If you have to ask, just don’t wear it.  Lastly, feel free to wear your best country attire this Thursday to get ready for the dance. Cowboy dress code for Thursday is the same as above.  We will see you there!  Brophy Student Council

BST’S Quill Auditions: Hey Broncos, don’t miss the chance to be a part of the last musical of this school year! No experience necessary! Brophy Student Theatre’s Quill is an original musical comedy about ninjas, dragons, the true meaning of friendship, and so much more, not necessarily in that order. Parent-Teacher Conferences March 12 – Parent-Teacher Conferences are Tuesday, March 12 from 4-8 p.m. in teacher classrooms or offices. Conferences are short, 10-minute conversations which give parents an opportunity to check in with teachers face-to-face about student achievement. Parents can sign up for conferences online beginning March 4 at 8 a.m. through Monday, March 11 by logging in to myBrophy, opening the Resource tab, and looking for the Parent-Teacher Conferences tile. Unfortunately, some teachers cannot be at conferences due to other school commitments. If a teacher is unavailable or is already booked for the night, please feel free to reach out to that teacher via email to set up a conversation at a later date. Furthermore, if your son is struggling and you think a longer conversation is necessary, you may want to contact the teacher directly to set up an appointment.

SUMMIT ON HUMAN DIGNITY – The Search for Health: Dignifying the Mind, Body, and Spirit

The last Summit excursion is a hike! Piestewa Peak!  The Hike for the Summit will begin at the Hopi Parking area in the Piestewa Peak Park. Construction has left some areas closed to parking.  The hike will begin at 2:30-ish from the Hopi parking area. So, grab lunch/change/whatever after school and head over.
