MLK, Jr. preaching in the chapel today! Because Martin Luther King, Jr was one of the greatest orators and voices for justice of all time, many often forget his first job: a Baptist minister who preached to his congregation the tough and beautiful truths of the Bible. Last year, we offered the recording of MLK’s “The Drum Major Instinct” and many shared how moving it was to hear his voice in a sermon/speech that was NOT his famous “I Have a Dream.”

TODAY! we will offer Martin Luther King’s “But If Not” sermon and invite you into the chapel to listen. Classes are welcome! The sermon is only 23 minutes in length and will start 7 minutes after the bell so that you can gather. The script of the sermon is attached – 100 copies will be available in the chapel for congregants to follow along.  We hope you’ll take this opportunity to hear MLK from the pulpit…and don’t forget to march next Monday – Jan 21 – http://arizonamlk.wixsite.com/azmlkorg

MASS – For every question of life that needs increased dignity and help in our world, Mass provides a powerful inspiration:  The unborn – we enter the world of Mass vulnerable and in need of the community around us for support – We were all “the unborn” at some point.  The earth – the gifts of bread and wine at Mass come to us from dignified work of hands and the beauty of soil, seed, water, and plant. We all need the fruits of the earth to survive. The dying – at Mass, the struggle, suffering, and death of Jesus is praised as the ultimate sign of trusting God’s will, not avoiding pain or cheating death. We all are mortal and must face death and disease.  The condemned inmate – at Mass, we are reminded that Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and Resurrection means the possibility of redemption for all people. We are all sinners who can receive God’s mercy.  The life we have – the scriptures at Mass remind us that the moral or immoral choices we make that involve our minds, bodies, and spirits determine the building of the Kingdom of God every day in our midst. We all must live gratefully, avoiding destructive habits and thoughts.

Advocacy Day – On Wednesday, January 23rd, the Advocacy Club will partner with Aliento to host an Advocacy Day at the State Capitol to advocate for legislation that would grant in-state tuition to undocumented students in Arizona. This is an important event for empowering student activism, and we need YOUR help. If you’d like to spend the day at the capitol meeting legislators and pushing forward Catholic Social Teaching, report to K10 Wednesday, January 16th, for a training meeting.  You must attend the meeting if you would like to participate.

We invite you to join us at the performance of Tolton: From Slave to Priest, an original one-man live drama performed by actor Jim Coleman and produced by Saint Luke Productions. This professional production will be presented at Brophy College Preparatory on Tuesday, January 15, 7 p.m., Black Box Theater; coordinated by Dr. Matthew Whitaker and Brophy’s Office of Equity and Inclusion.  In Tolton, audiences encounter firsthand the life and message of Fr. Augustus Tolton, the first African American Catholic priest. Born a slave, ordained a priest in Rome, and sent to minister in Chicago, Fr. Tolton faced prejudice throughout his life. However, he also saw that the Catholic Church was the antidote to the discrimination he experienced. “It was the priests of the Church who taught me to pray and to forgive my persecutors,” he said. “We should welcome all people into the Church, not send them away.”  Fr. Tolton’s compelling story of courage and reconciliation resonates deeply with modern American audiences. Bishop Joseph Perry of Chicago, postulator for Fr. Tolton’s canonization cause, is calling Tolton a production that will “inspire a new era of peace, hope, and forgiveness in America.”  Tolton: From Slave to Priest is a perfect opportunity for our communities to come together. We are very fortunate to have this caliber of theater at our parish, and I hope that you will join us for this inspiring event. If you have any questions or would like a flyer or poster to help promote this event, please contact Dr. Matthew Whitaker, Ph.D., Director, Office of Equity and Inclusion at mwhitaker@brophyprep.org.  Admission: Free-Will Offering  TRAILER – Video URL  https://youtu.be/4vd3TGM94mE  75 minutes / Recommended for ages 10 & up.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

CONGRATULATIONS to Brophy’s varsity basketball team on their triple-overtime win last night against #3 Perry!  Down 4 points with 46 seconds to play in regulation, the Broncos battled back to force overtime on 3 straight driving layups by senior Marques White, including the last one with 1.4 seconds left to play.  Brophy trailed by five midways through the second OT but again battled back to tie it at 64 and send it to a third OT thanks to a big three-point play by junior Joe Feeney and 2 free throws by Marques White.  With the score tied and the clock winding down in the 3rd OT, White drove to the basket and kicked it out to senior Ethan Smith who hit a game-winning 3 from the corner with 1.3 seconds left on the clock – WHEW, INTENSE!!  The team would like to thank all of the Brophy basketball fans who came out and cheered them on last night – the crowd’s energy gave the team a huge lift throughout the game.  Next home game is Tuesday, January 15th against Chandler.
