Brophy College Preparatory Alumni Service Corps


The Alumni Service Corps (ASC) is a post-college service program for Brophy graduates, and graduates of other Jesuit high schools. Through their work as Brophy faculty members, ASC volunteers gain an important experience of Ignatian service. The ASC volunteers also grow in their understanding of Ignatian spirituality through their community life and regular meetings with members of the Brophy faculty and the Phoenix Jesuit Community.

How the program works:

Brophy provides ASC volunteers with housing, a community car (and gas), health insurance, and a modest monthly stipend. ASC volunteers are placed within the school according to their interests and skill sets. Each volunteer though will be involved in each of the areas of school life in some capacity: in the classroom, in co-curricular activities, and in the work of the Office of Faith and Justice. Volunteers might teach one class, assist with the Loyola Academy, coach a sport, lead retreats, participate in immersion trips, and in all activities will serve as mentors and role models for current Brophy and Loyola Academy students. The commitment for an ASC volunteer is 11 months, from August to July. Volunteers will gather for an orientation retreat at the end of the summer and then will join the Brophy faculty for their back to school meetings before the start of classes. The ASC community will also have a mid-year retreat, and a retreat to close the school year at the end of June. ASC volunteers will work during the month of June assisting with the immersion program, Summer Loyola Project, and the summer camp element of Loyola Academy. Beyond the work, an important element of the ASC experience will be life in community. All ASC members will live together and will be intentional about structuring time for communal meals, communal prayer and reflection, and communal recreation. The program is intended for 3-4 alumni who have recently graduated from college. ASC volunteers serve for one year and it is not expected or typical for Brophy to hire ASC volunteers as full time faculty members at the completion of their ASC year. Volunteers are welcome to apply for openings that may exist.

ASC Guidance and Mentoring:

The ASC is guided and mentored by a team consisting of Principal Bob Ryan, Director of Alumni Relations Fr. Philip S. Postell, S.J., as well as faculty members Jon Shores and Kristin Venberg.
