Brophy alumni college soccer update

Brophy alumni soccer players making strides at the college level

With the end of the second week approaching, I figured it was the perfect time to relay some of the latest Brophy Soccer alumni news.

About a week ago, I got a phone call from Zach Hudson ’12, who is now at Gonzaga. For some reason, he wasn’t heavily recruited for division one schools; however, I thought that GU would be a great fit for him. I contacted their coach, who told me he would scout Zach. He did, and later said he had nothing to offer…except a ‘preferred walk-on’. I told this to Zach and, ere the optimist, he said it was ‘good enough’. Zach worked hard on his game through the summer, showed up at the preferred walk on, and made the team. Perseverance, personified.

Tyler McGehee ’12 attended the Notre Dame camp this summer, with the hopes that he would catch the eye of their coaching staff…junior Conor Coleman was also there (they were roommates!). While Conor had an absolutely great camp, he told me that Tyler gave everything he had, typically, but seemed extremely nervous, and thus played really poorly. I spoke with Tyler afterwards, and despite his summer setback, he was undaunted. Typically. Two days ago, he began tryouts for Notre Dame, and I spoke with him tonight…he seems ‘very pleased’…with two more days left. We’ll cross our collective fingers.

Wearing the #8…the true-freshman central midfielder for Lake Forest University…the ever-joyous/grinning…Timmy Mourikes ’12. He looks to break the starting lineup next week.

Casey Skowron ’11 decided to try for a walk-on with the University of Arizona football team…as kicker! …and he made it! Now we’ll wait to see if he can kick his way to a starting role! Pac12 today…NFL tomorrow! (photo left)

Andre LeBlanc ’11 begins his second season at Long Island University playing as their creative central midfielder…he started 18 games last year as a freshman. He’ll be their central creator this year.

Patrick Poblete ’10 begins his junior season as the starting goalkeeper for the #5 nationally-ranked New Mexico Lobos. They opened Friday night on the road at #2 UCLA…a tough, tough test, and patrick came out with a HUGE win 3-2. Check the national press: Patrick has finally hit his stride.

Brian Hines ’10 & Ben Anderson ’10 have begun their junior seasons at Trinity University (preseason ranked #4, division III) in San Antonio. Hines scored 10 goals last year as a sophomore, which led the team! Hines is definitely back to do more damage this year, as they open on the road Friday night.

James Cohn ’09 begins his fourth and final year as the starting central midfielder for the University of San Diego. He just returned from a preseason playing in Ireland where he led his team to 2 wins…USD is a major NCAA contender, with Cohn at the helm.

And lastly, the musical combination of 2011 soccer alumni Esteban Obregon, Connor Shea and Nick Gelo is still together. “Something Like Seduction” now has released numerous singles & spent the summer playing music festivals. They’re opening up for “The Dirty Heads” in Tucson on September 14th. If you’re down in “El Pueblo”.

Special thanks to Nate Sundemeier ’12 for the update
